Chapter 14

Wind Whistler and Doll’s Eyes have been best friends all their lives, and so, one would think that they would have the same taste in everything, which also meant in men. And those who thought that, were right.

However, they were also as different as could be. Wind Whistler was the more forward one out of the two, saying what she wanted, when she wanted, and not really giving a damn what someone had to say. However, she relished in constructive criticism, and always tried to better herself.

Doll’s Eyes, on the otherhand, was extremely submissive, and would usually let people talk for her, and chose not to get into any drama. But, if something went down, and it dealt with her sister or friends, she would say something, but that wouldn’t always happen. Doll’s Eyes would rather keep out and let the situation resolve itself.

One day, Wind Whistler and Doll’s Eyes were hanging out on one of the temple walls, watching the people of the marketplace, and their eyes landed on a stall, and it looked as though it were an auction, but there was hardly any action, because the auctioner was being to timid. Wind Whistler turned to Doll’s Eyes.

“That guy seems like you,” to which she received a glare from Doll’s Eyes, “I bet you I could get those people wanting that stuff.”

“Wind Whistler, you can’t do that.”

“Watch me…”

Wind Whistler smirked at her best friend, and hopped off of the wall, and ran over to the stall. He turned the man around, so he was facing her. The man was taller than her, but, she could tell, just by his aura, that he was no way suitable for something like this.

“Excuse me, sir, but are you having problems?”

The man nodded, and Wind Whistler smirked, and set him aside, and then, the fun began.


While Wind Whistler started to rile up the crowd, and started to actually sell things, Doll’s Eyes still sat the wall, and she then noticed Buzzard Hook and Monkey Jaw walking by, and she called out to them. The two men walked over to her, and Doll’s Eyes hopped off the wall and greeted them.

“So, where is your partner in crime, love?” Buzzard Hook asked Doll’s Eyes.

Doll’s Eyes pointed with her head in the direction of the auction, and Monkey Jaw let out a snort.

“Man, she can never let anyone do their job, can she?”

“Yeah, Monkey Jaw, that’s right. But, you still love her, don’t you?” Buzzard Hook, turning his and asked his friend.

Monkey Jaw looked down, and simply smiled. The relationship between him and Wind Whistler was more of a best friends relationship, but there was so much trust and likeness, that something COULD come out of it, but only time would tell.

Monkey Jaw knew that Wind Whistler was a free spirit and couldn’t be held down, especially not by a man. He also knew that she would RATHER have a best friend relationship with him, since, he had seen for the few weeks ever since the girls were taken to the city, Wind Whistler wasn’t exactly attracted to guys. But, he didn’t know that for a fact, and really only kept that piece of information to himself.

Even though he yearned to be with her, Monkey Jaw knew his distance, and kept it. He finally looked up and smiled widely at the chaos Wind Whistler was ensuing.

Wind Whistler had sold over 100 items in the 10 minutes she had been there, and there were more and more people coming around.

“OK, we have freshly made vase here… At least it looks fresh… heh… I’m starting the bid at 3 cocao beans… ok, now I have four… I say 5, 5 cocao beans, we have 5… 6, 6, 6 cocao beans… going once, twice, SOLD to the ladt with the blue flower in the her hair…”

This went on for another 5 minutes, and all of the vendor’s things were sold. The man tried to pay Wind Whistler, but she denied the money, and went to join Doll’s Eyes, and saw Monkey Jaw and Buzzard Hook. She noticed Buzzard Hook’s arm around Doll’s Eyes waist, and smirked.

“Ohohoho, my, my, my, what do we have here? A warrior fetching his mate? How are you, Buzzard Hook?”

“I’m good, Wind Whistler. So, did you have fun taking another vendor’s job away?”

“Yes, it was quite fun.”

Wind Whistler laughed, and then turned her attention to Monkey Jaw.

“What’s up?”

“Nothing much, you?”

Wind Whistler shrugged, but smiled. She felt a huge connection with this man, but didn’t know about this other sensation that was filling her as well. She felt very comfortable with him, and could talk to him about everything. She liked that, and felt happy.

“Well, we better get going back to the barracks, right Buzzard Hook?”

Monkey Jaw looked at Buzzard Hook, who nodded, and gave Doll’s Eyes a kiss on the cheek and bid her farewell. Monkey Jaw gave Wind Whistler a hug and the two young women watch their partners leave to go to the barracks.

When they were out of sight, Wind Whistler nudged Doll’s Eyes, and they headed off to the temple, and join the conversation of what that day brought all of the girls.

They all knew that tomorrow would be a new day, and none of them could wait what it would bring.

Chapter 15

The sun rose up, and crept into the windows of the temple where the girls were at. The first to wake up was Meadow Lily, immediately followed by Star Gazer.

Once they were all awake, the girl went and got ready: going to the bath house, getting dressed, and heading to the main room, where they would usually meet Sundance Rose. But today, instead of seeing just Sundance Rose, they saw five woman, including Sundance Rose.

Getting a closer, the girls knew who these other women were and ran into the room, screaming. They were their mothers.

Star Gazer and Golden Rain ran to their mother, whose name was Twilight Sunshower (TSS). TSS had beautiful black hair that was braided and curled in an elegant style. She wore a light blue dress, that accentuated her bright blue eyes, to which, one could where her daughters got them from. TSS was also slightly shorter than her eldest daughter, who stood a good 5’9”. However, her elegance and pride made her stand out more.

Gentle Blossom and Cherry Jubilee greeted their mother, Starlight Blaze (SB) by almost knocking her down. SB also had black hair, which was put into a fierce and almost flame-like hairstyle. She wore a red and orange dress, that only made her dark blue eyes look more fierce. Her sweet docile face was at times overcome by the ferocity in her eyes. Gentle Blossom got this trait from SB.

Moon Orchid and Doll’s Eyes walked up to their mother, known as Meadowlark Song (MLS). MLS’s hairstyle was in a wavy and braided, almost Amazonian-like hairstyle. She also wore a dark green and brown dress, that brought out her teal eyes. MLS was very beautiful, but, by the way she carried herself, she was very hard and stoic. However, the softness in her eyes told another story.

Lastly, Snow Drop and Wind Whistler greeted their mother, Bright Eyes, who unlike them, was very still and very stern. Her hairstyle was in a windswept fashion, being long and flipped up slightly. Bright Eyes wore a lavender dress, which brighten up her blue-grey eyes. Bright Eyes was very intelligent and took into great consideration to prove herself NOT to be a dummy, but she did have a heart, although her outward appearance did not show it.

Meadow Lily walked over to Sundance Rose and smiled.

“It’s been a long time since we have seen them, isn’t it?”

“15 years since we have left the city. They have come, to tell you something quite important.”

Meadow Lily looked confused, but Sundance Rose dismissed the look, and walked over to the group.

“Well, I see you are all very excited, however, there is a lot of work to be done, and we must start as soon as possible.”

“Yes,” interjected Twilight Sunshower, “there is a task ahead of all of you today, that you must pass.”

The girls all looked at each other, showing fear, anxiety, and excitement all at the same time. Meadow Lily spoke up.

“What is it that we must do?”

Sundance Rose looked at the mothers, who looked back at her, and Sundance Rose looked at the girls, and smiled.

“You must all release your Inner Spirits.”

All of the girls looked at Sundance Rose, and didn’t say a word.

The Inner Spirit was the force of the body that had unlimited power, however, could do unspeakable damage to the person unleashing, unless it is unleash correctly.

Moon Orchid spoke up.

“And where are we to release our spirits?”

Her mother answered.

“In the only place big enough in the city, which is the ball court.”

The girls said nothing. They then noticed their mothers getting ready to leave the temple, to head off to the ball court, and they all followed.

After the quiet 15 minute walk to the ball court, the girls noticed that the warriors were practicing, and Meadow Lily noticed her father walking over to her mother.

“Sundance, what’s going on?”

“The girls need to do something today, and it cannot wait. If you and your men want to stay and watch, you may.”

“Sundance…”

Sundance Rose looked at Zero Wolf, and he could tell that she wasn’t lying.

While the mothers were setting up, the Holcanes greeted the girls, and asked them as well.

“We have to unleash our Inner Spirits today, and our mothers say that we cannot do any other time,” Meadow Lily stated to Middle Eye, who only folded his arms.

After the mothers were done, they called the girls down to beginning point of the ball court, and while they did that, the Holcanes all hung out under the shade, however, keeping a sharp eye on their ladies.

Sundance Rose started to talk.

“One by one, each of you will attempt to release your Inner Spirit. Not many have done it on their first try. I will call Star Gazer first.”

Star Gazer gulped and looked at her mother, who lead her to the circle in the middle of the ball court. It looked as though someone had drawn this circle, however, when Star Gazer stepped into it, she felt a huge pulled, and felt as though her feet were bolted to the ground. It was uncomfortable at first, yet after a mere few seconds, she felt normal, and waited for her instruction. She looked up at her mother.

“Star Gazer, I want you to think of something horrible, of something dreadful, and then, lash out at that thought. When you have done that, you will have completed your task.”

Star Gazer nodded, and closed her eyes. She tried to think, and for a long time, about 5 minutes, nothing happened. And then… it struck.

Thinking of her beloved Ten Peccary and Morning Sun being taken away from her crossed her mind, and she immediately started to fight. Her eyes shut tight and her breathing becoming more ragged, Star Gazer felt pressure surrounding her, and she had to extrovert it.

The Holcanes witnessed this, and for the first time in their lives, they felt fear. This especially went for Ten Peccary, who was watching the love of his life performing a life-threatening task.

Gripping her fists so hard to the point of bleeding, Star Gazer suddenly shot her eyes right open and the pressure surrounding her was suddenly blown away by a force so strong, that it knocked down the warriors who were standing up. The Holcanes looked at the girls, who all remained standing, and remembered about their resistance training.

Star Gazer closed her eyes momentarily, and opened them again, and her eyes were almost white, and as she opened her mouth slightly, her canines had become almost jaguar-like. She stayed like this for a few moments, before collapsing to the ground, in a heap.

Tem Peccary ran over to her, and picked her head up. Twilight Sunshower this act of affection and looked at him, and him to her.

“You are good man, Ten Peccary… Treat her well.”

Ten Peccary nodded, and brought Star Gazer over to where the other girls were. She recovered quickly and looked up to him. She smiled, and cupped his cheek.

“Thank you… My mother approves of you, I guess.”

Ten Peccary said nothing, and leant down and kissed her.

The same thing that Star Gazer went through in the circle, played out identically for each and every one of the other girls, until it came to Meadow Lily’s turn.

As Meadow Lily stood in the circle, she felt a presence in the air that was unfamiliar and daunting. She turned towards the cornfield and stared.

Then, suddenly, a huge owl flies overhead, and from the owl, a man jumped down, and stood face to face with Meadow Lily. She looked at him cautiously.

“Who are you?”

He didn’t answer, but she knew that he wasn’t right. His gray skin, black eyes, and dark garb gave off an evil aura, and the way he smiled sent a cold shiver through her body. She stepped back, and he stepped forward.

Suddenly, Sundance Rose appeared.

“Ah Puch, get out of here!!!”

“Ahh, IxChel, what a pleasure meeting you here. Is this your daughter? My, she looks just like you.”

Meadow Lily’s eyes widened when the man known as Ah Puch called her mother IxChel. But, her thoughts were interrupted when suddenly, Ah Puch her grabbed her, and blasted away SDR, so that she fell, and was far away from her daughter.

Ah Puch grinned evilly and looked at Meadow Lily.

“Let this curse be undone…”

Then, taking out a dagger, that was black all around, the mysterious man stabbed Meadow Lily in the heart. Gasping slightly, Meadow Lily fell to the ground.

The others watched the man fall from the owl, and the girls looked at their mothers. Star Gazer listened to what they were saying, and then, they all noticed Sundance Rose facing this man down. They all heard him call her IxChel, but that moment passed when they witnessed Meadow Lily being murdered.

Middle Eye watched the closest, and then, as he watched the dagger plunge into Meadow Lily’s heart, everything in his world shattered, and his emotions ran out.

Middle Eye ran as fast as he could, being followed by the Holcanes, and the girls, and the mothers. He slid towards Meadow Lily, who was barely alive, but her eyes were opened, and her breathing ragged.

“Meadow Lily!! Don’t you leave us!!!”

Not being able to speak, all Meadow Lily could do was raise her bloody hand up to Middle Eye’s face and stroke his cheek. She smiled at him. Middle Eye grabbed her hand, and kissed her palm, and suddenly felt the life from Meadow Lily’s hand leave her.

Frantically, he called out to Sundance Rose, who was hysterical, and Middle Eye looked at Meadow Lily.

“Don’t leave me, Meadow Lily… I love you.”

With that, Meadow Lily died in Middle Eye’s arms, but Sundance Rose grabbed her, and they all rushed to the temple, in order to resurrect her.

Middle Eye stared at Meadow Lily’s blood, and shook his fists in anger. He got up and ran with the others to the temple, and hoped that something good would come.

Middle Eye was on a mission, and although he wouldn’t say it to anyone else, he truly loved Meadow Lily, and was not going to lose her.

Chapter 16

As they all ran to the temple, Sundance Rose held Meadow Lily closely, and even though her daughter’s blood was being spilled, she couldn’t let her go.

As they all go to the temple, the High Priest stopped them.

“Sundance Rose, we are busy, you cannot just barge - -“

“My daughter is dying, and we all witnessed it. Now, if you want to stay alive, get out of my way.”

The High Priest nodded, and allowed all of them to enter the healing room, where Sundance Rose laid Meadow Lily down on the slab on top of the altar, and the other mothers stood around the altar, while the girls stood in between their mothers.

Sundance Rose was looking the room for something. Zero Wolf walked over to her.

“Sundance…”

Sundance didn’t even give him time to speak, as she retrieved what she was looking for: a white crystal, shaped like a flower. She pushed past her husband, and walked over to her daughter, and laid the crystal on her chest.

Twilight Sunshower looked at Sundance Rose.

“IxChel, you haven’t done this is over 500 years.”

“I understand that, Ixzaluoh, but I need to do it to save her.”

Meadowlark Song then spoke up.

“IxChel… The curse is too powerful…”

Sundance Rose slammed her fists on the slab, and screamed.

“No, it is not, Chibirias!! She will come back to life.”

The mothers all looked at Sundance Rose, and then they looked at their own daughters, who, each in turn, looked at their mothers confused. Then, it was Star Gazer who was the first to speak, and asked her mother.

“Tell me, if I'm hearing correctly, are we the children of goddesses and of men?”

Twilight Sunshower sighed, and nodded.

The girls then understood, in that moment, what it really meant to release their Inner Spirits. They weren’t releasing anyting at all, but only bringing out their immortal side, but, the reason behind doing this was still far from their minds. The girls all looked at Meadow Lily’s body, and then, looked at Sundance Rose, who was chanting, and although the crystal would light up, it would fade out immediately.

“What is the point of this healing, mother?” Wind Whistler asked Bright Eyes.

“This is the divine form of healing, and it is used to bring back people, who are close to death…”

“However ,” Sundance continued, “it cannot work if the victim has been cursed.”

“Sundance,” Zero Wolf spoke, coming up behind, and cupping her shoulders, “what is this curse that has been laid upon our daughter?”

Sundance could only look at Meadow Lily, and tears fell from her eyes. She then turned to the group.

“Ah Puch had fallen in love with me, and I denied him. Since he knew I wanted a daughter, he cursed me, that when I would have one, that she would die on the day of her ascension. And he knew that I lived in the city.”

Zero Wolf looked shocked, and Sundance Rose turned to him.

“I didn’t leave you because I didn’t love you, Zero Wolf… I had to bring Meadow Lily somewhere safe. And she remained safe, until you ravaged her village. So I thought that now would be a good time for them to all ascend. But, I was wrong.”

“I have a question,” Gentle Blossom quipped, “if it was only Meadow Lily that was cursed, then why did we all have to leave the city?”

“Because you all have a bond that is unbreakable, and Ah Puch knows that a bond as strong as yours is unbeatable. Meadow Lily would be a sitting duck without all of you.”

The girls understood, and then, Middle Eye stepped out from the shadows, as well as the other Holcanes, who each went to their respectful partners, and spoke up.

“What was this curse’s element?”

Sundance Rose grimaced and one word fell from her lips.

“Hate.”

Suddenly, the room got cold, and Twilight Sunshower, Starlight Blaze, Meadowlark Song, and Bright Eyes all looked at Sundance Rose. They all had the same connection as their daughters, and they all knew what Sundance Rose was going to say.

“Because he hated so much that I denied him, Ah Puch cursed my daughter, that she would never know love, or friendship, but he was wrong. She had found friendship… but…”

Sundance Rose then remembered the other part. Love. Meadow Lily had friendship, which Sundance Rose was certain of, but love… Meadow Lily was without it.

“She does have love…” Golden Rain spoke up, to which Middle Eye looked at her, “you said it yourself, Middle Eye. You told Meadow Lily you loved her.”

Sundance Rose stood up and walked over to Middle Eye.

“Is this true, young man? Do you truly love my daughter? Or is it just a jest? I’ve heard about you, Middle Eye. You’re the type of man who leaves his women high and dry. Never showing feelings towards them. How can I be sure you truly love her?”

Middle Eye didn’t speak for awhile, and then, as Sundance Rose turned, he finally did.

“My lady, your daughter is the only person in this world who had shown me true compassion and kindness. She never cared that I was a warrior, and she never treated me better than anyone else. She treated me like a human being, and it was her who made me realize I was in love with her.”

“And how did she make you realize you loved her? Was it when she died?”

Middle Eye jumped back. He was shocked when she screamed at him, but she had a right to do so. It was her daughter, and Meadow Lily was dead. Middle Eye gulped, as tears came to his eyes. He walked over the Meadow Lily, sat by her, and grabbed her hand. He then looked at Sundance Rose.

“No, it was before that… I didn’t realize it then, but I do now. It was about a few days ago, and she told me, ‘And I meant it when I said I cared about you. Even though you may not let people in, you have a place in my heart, when the day comes, and no will be there to help you, be assured that I will be there to help you, even if you don’t want it. I won’t let you die, even though you are a sociopathic jerk.’ And after she said that to me, I felt remorse for hurting her the day before, and I vowed to never do it again. So, if I could, I wish I could bring her back to life right now.”

Sundance Rose looked at Middle Eye, and looked at Meadow Lily, and noticed that the crystal was glowing.

The rest of the group saw this, and they all held each other’s hands, as they lent some of their life to Meadow Lily.

Middle Eye continued to hold on to Meadow Lily’s hands, and then, he felt warmth emulating from her hand.

The girls looked on as Meadow Lily’s skin was returning to it’s light tan color.

Sundance Rose leant over Meadow Lily.

“Meadow Lily?”

Meadow Lily slowly opened her eyes, and looked at her mother and smiled.

“Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me, darling… thank Middle Eye.”

Meadow Lily looked confused, and looked down at whose hand was grasping her, and she scanned from the man’s hand, to his arm, to his shoulder, and then to his face, and it was indeed Middle Eye.

“You saved me?”

Meadow Lily went to sit up, and Middle Eye sat right by her, to hold her up.

She continued looking at him, until he answered.

“Yes… I did… I couldn’t bare to lose you, Meadow Lily.”

He cupped her cheek in his hand, and leaned in, so that their noses were touching. Although the others couldn’t see, Meadow Lily could, and she noticed a tear falling from his left eye.

“I love you, Meadow Lily. I always did, and always will.”

Meadow Lily, shocked, could only cry, and nestle her head in the crook of his neck.

Meanwhile, Sundance Rose stood in the background, holding her hand to her heart. Tears of joy came to her eyes. She knew now, that Meadow Lily was untouchable.


After all of the fuss, Meadow Lily got up from Middle Eye’s lap, and walked over to the girls. The first person she walked to was Star Gazer, who hugged her best friend tightly.
Each girl got their turn to hug Meadow Lily, and Meadow Lily finally backed over to Middle Eye.

“Middle Eye… I wanna thank you for saving me. But, about you saying you love me… all I have to say is this…”

Middle Eye waited for the worst, but received a kiss from Meadow Lily, to which he reprocated gratefully. She then broke the kiss, and then turned to her mother, and the other mothers.

“I’ll be needing to ascend soon, but it can wait. Until then,” she turned back to the girls, “we still need to fix up this city.”

The girls all laughed, and, knew, that even after dying, and coming back to life, Meadow Lily was not going to let down her destiny.
