Richard Can was born in the village of Presumida in Quintana Roo and grew up in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo. He speaks his native language of Mayan as well as Spanish, which he learned while attending school. He recieved his degree in Primary Education, and presently lives in Cancun, Quintana Roo, where he has been a primary education instructor for the last 11 years. He teaches children between the ages of 6 and 14 years old. Apocalypto is his first acting role.
